I have recently talked to three different people who told me about dreams that they have for their life. They wanted to be doing x,y, or z and they hoped to be doing one of those letters of the alphabet some time soon. I might have annoyed them because I asked a lot of questions. I don’t mean to ask so many questions but I have never been taught another way of having a conversation. So one of the questions that I asked them is what’s stopping them from doing their dream right now? Their answers were the same…I Don’t Know.
If you are like me then you wait for someone to hand you your dream on a golden platter complete with a Chipotle burrito and a lifetime supply of awesomeness. I know the saying is a silver platter but I think gold is nicer than silver. I digress. The point is that I wait for someone to fulfill my dream for me.
If you have a dream then start doing that dream now. Don’t wait for it to be handed to you. If you want to be a writer then don’t wait for a publisher to knock on your door to start writing. Start writing now. If you are a preacher don’t wait until you have an audience of thousands. Start preaching now. If feel called to ministry then start doing ministry now. Volunteer and lead a small group or volunteer your time at the church office. If you want a different job then get your resume ready and start applying. The point is that you should earn the right for your dream to become a reality. In other words start doing your dream now and then see what doors open. Gold platters are nice but I’ve waited too long for one to come along.
What
You could’ve just called Rob… Instead you wrote a blog to me… Sad
Ryan, funny. I actually had this conversation with three other people. You’d be the fourth.
Exactly. I told my wife for years that I wanted to write. Then I wouldn’t. Finally, I began a blog and didn’t know what I was doing. Then another, but I knew a little more. Now I know just how little I know…but I’m doing it. Now I’m looking at taking the dream to the next level. But I had to start somewhere.
Larry, good for you! It’s not easy to get started but I’m glad that you did.
Good post today. Sometimes a dream never materializes or gets scuttled because it depends on more than just you. I have been thinking on this for some time now and have kind of touched on it from several angles in my blog. However, your point is valid, do what you can and seize the opportunities that you can.
Daniel, I agree. In order to get a book deal or whatever someone has to help you. But sometimes I wait for the opportunity when I should be doing it all along. I meant to include this in the post but I don’t blog to make money. I blog because I love to write. Some people wait for whatever to come about but then they miss out. My dream is to write a book, but I’m not going to miss out on doing my dream while I wait for a publisher. I’m going to keep writing. Thanks for the comment!
But if I get started now, then I can’t sit around playing what if anymore!
Hey, have you read Quitter!
🙂
Ricky, I am reading it now. LOVE it!
Great post and very timely in my life right now! I always use age an excuse & figure I’ll get around to doing what I really want to do when I’m “older” when I really could (and should) get started now!
Samantha, you are not alone. I think a lot of us think that way. The problem is that before you know it you aren’t in your 20’s, 30’s, 40’s etc. It’s never too late to start a dream but why not start when we are young?
I love Quifter
My dream is to get a dream. I do a bunch of different stuff right now, but I’m not sure where I want to go in the future. I guess I stay too busy to think about it…
I would think about it more, but I’m too busy. =)
Seriously, I’ll have to find some time to do some dreamin’…
TJ, I hear ya. I struggled with this for the longest time. I would hear inspiring people like Steven Furtick talk about living your vision or dream. I’d walk away feeling like crap because my biggest dream was to beat a video game. I prayed and asked God for a vision and He finally answered my prayer. Now I think about it a lot. It might be worth a shot to ask God if you haven’t already.
It took nearly 10 years (and no small amount of encouragement and positive pressure from me) for my wife to follow her dream. She quite her job delivering pizzas and went back to school. We had to make sacrifices as we were down to one salary, but taking that leap of faith opened the door for so many blessing.
Now she is much happier in life and has so much more self confidence and pride in who she is. Sure taking that leap was scary, for both of us, but seeing all those changes in her…totally worth it!
Randal, I wondered that on Sunday. She handed me a card for her new business and I wondered what happened to the pizza delivery job. Good to hear. Very inspiring. I love that she has you to support her!
I have a dream of teaching group keyboard lessons – someday with some property and the right facility – I’m GOING TO DO IT!
Cindy, I believe in you! You will do it!
I think Dream organization is my issue! How do you organize your dreams? How could you possibly file your dreams accordingly? I find myself with so many dreams, goals, and ambitions sometimes I have to slow my roll, and clean off my mental plate. If that makes sense.
Secondly, this post makes me evaluate what excatly a dream is? Is it the same as an idea, are dreams and goals the same? When we say we are “called” into ministry, is that a dream or obligation?
This post clarifys all this. Regardless of the questions gripping me, one word sorts it and organizes it all, that word is ACTION!!!.
SEE YOU TONIGHT AT THE HOUSE PARTY!!! WHOOP WHOOP!!
Joseph, I think you bring up some great questions. A lot of people struggle to have 1 dream. Others struggle to focus on 1 dream. They have thousands of ideas. I think you are right in that whatever our dream is we should take some sort of action. I think with prayer and seeking wise counsel we can learn to figure out which dream God wants us to pursue. One thing that helps me is that a dream from God doesn’t leave. It’s not a fad. If you are thinking about ministry and 6 months, 1 year, 2 years etc. go by and you are still thinking about being in ministry then there is a great chance that those thoughts are from God and not from yourself.
Thanks! I appreciate the insight, and advice.
“wait for someone to hand you your dream on a golden platter complete with a Chipotle burrito and a lifetime supply of awesomeness.”
uh…i think I just found my dream….
now…where to buy a gold platter?…LOL!
Definitely aspire to be a published author someday and spent far too much time just waiting for something to happen. Finally went ahead and started a blog two months back and at the very least am having a blast with all this extra writing! Learning to seek out that golden platter rather than wait hungrily for it to arrive.
Writing and being a pastor are my dreams–and I am working on them. The main thing, though, is to bring glory to God. I work on that daily–even when I am terrible at it.
Great stuff to think about. I think this happens to a lot of people. I know for me it’s really scary to pursue something I dream about. I’m usually afraid I’ll mess it up.
It doesn’t have to be that complicated. Just pay taxes, in any amount, at any time during the last four years, and you get to vote in the next election. One person, one vote.
My dream right now is to start culinary school in the spring. I’m just waiting on my acceptance letter from the school so I can get everything else set in motion. My long term goal is to move back to Virginia to open my own bakery/deli. I really miss VA.
