Cool or Uncool: Guys wearing a button down shirt with no undershirt? That means you can see a patch of chest hair.
completely depends on the shirt, the guy, the amount of chest hair, the place, the year… It’s probably ok. I don’t want to go as far as saying cool without a case study.
During the summer somewhere other than work. Ok. In the middle of winter, while at work. Not OK.
Classic white undershirt. Every time. Classy.
I have never worn an undershirt, never will, they are too confining. Now I have chest hair, but it doesn’t hang out of my shirt. Are you thinking of some 70s gigolo with his shirt unbuttoned down to his navel? If you button your shirt completely except for the top button, you are fine. This question caught me by surprise as nobody wears undershirts any more, nobody except old men over 120 years of age.
I gotta say I just watched some kind of primetime news show and the reporter had 3, maybe 4 buttons undid. I couldn’t stop looking at his pale white chest (not on purpose mind you- I’m happily married). So my motto is “right above the chest hair”. Probably just the one button – maybe two if I’m feeling froggy.
I’m with dp. In most cases I prefer the undershirt, but if a person has the right charm, they can break the rules and others will want to follow.
strictly depends on the dude wearing the shirt and the type of shirt he’s wearing. i don’t have an inordinate amount of chest hair, so i never have hair hanging out if i go sans undershirt.
most occasions, i go with the shirt underneath. although, i don’t always stick to just a straight white undershirt… sometimes it’s brown, or navy, or gray… whatever looks the best.
i feel a little strange for having spent part of my day putting thought into this answer…
mixed bag for me. depends ont he situation and if you have several inches of chest hair over flowing from the top. ewww!

as far as my personal opinion….
I’ll go with cool ( in this case a synonym for OK) as long as none of the REST of the buttons pop open; as in “hair popping out in between where the buttons don’t hold the fabric together”, resulting in puckering. At THAT point, we go immediately to UNCOOL!

you’ve got to rock the chest hair. If you got it flaunt it. Especially the old guys with the reallllyyyyy long grey chest hairs that would find there way out of the shirt even if it was buttoned to the top. That being said it depends on the shirt and the weather. typically I wear the undershirt though, even though i won the lady over with the billowing chest hair.
