So I have debated about shaving my head for some time now. I have good days where I think that I have a long way to go and then days where I’m ready to stop holding on to what I’ve got. If I’m going the way of Mr. Clean I might as well go for it. Hair
- My wife has said “Heck To The No.”
- I have a roll on the back of my neck. I like to call this my speed bump. You can’t notice it unless I’m bald.
- Some other bald guys have told me that I have a long way to go.
- I don’t know how I’ll look bald.
So what do you think?
The reason I ask is because my wife has lifted her ban. She wanted good family pictures with me having hair. Since we have those she says I’m good to go. So…vote.
Below is poll for you to vote on. It’s anonymous so you don’t have to be embarrassed to say how you really feel.
Not sure if one is supposed to comment after voting. I use a 1/2 guard on mine. I’m not completely “clean”, but it’s the next best thing. I see my parents once a year. Every Christmas my mom says something about my baldness….and it’s not changed in 10the years.
Larry, I think that’s my next step.
Rob, you gotta hang on my man! Here’s some reasons why you should not:
Ok, so I’m new to posting comments…reasons why you should not, continued: 1. I shaved mine while I was deployed, its a pain in the butt, seriously! If you shave it, plan on doin it atleast once a week. 2. It’s cold out man, you bettter have some gear to keep your melon warm! 3. It feels weird, and everyone will want to touch it. Just makes it even more weird. 4. Due to lack of exposure to the sun you may or may not loook like a Q-Tip! Last but not least, you have plenty of hair left brother, wait till it gets shiny, from the pictures I’d guess you have a solid 5 yrs left. Thats all I got. Good luck buddy!
Jon, thanks for the advice. I appreciate it. Is this advice from experience?
Dude! You worry too much! I have had a “high forehead” for many years. I saw a picture of me in 5th grade with one. Several years ago (about 10) I had my wife start doing my hair. She puts the clippers down and let’s it rip. Frankly, I could care less. I don’t need a hairdryer. I don’t have to worry about it getting in my eyes when I cycle. I don’t have to worry about it blowing all over in the wind. I don’t have to worry about any kind of comb-over (those are just sick). My wife like to rub her hands on my head and say, “What does the crystal ball say today?” (Just kidding on that last one. That is what I tell people). Bald is sexy…so they say. For the record: I have very little hair left and I think if I let it grow would have the famous horseshoe.
Forgot: don’t have to worry about dandruff. Also, the body wash doubles for washing my head. 🙂
Thanks Bill. I’m not worried about it. It’s a fact of life. Some men go bald. I just don’t want to hang on too long. You know like sports heroes who affect their legacy because they can’t retire? I don’t want to be holding onto my glory years.
You met the missus’ (note proper use of apostrophe) requirements for family pictures. Try it. If you don’t like it, just wait. Hair will grow back. If you like it and it makes you feel awesome, think about how much awesomeness you will miss out on by waiting.
Walter, I have heard it won’t grow back the same. That’s what I’m nervous about. I already know I won’t like it as well, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
Take it in steps. Start by using the clippers and going real short then head out and get a tan on that head! My hubby shaves his head bald and occasionally lets his hair grow in… after a few months he wants to go bald again but because his head has not been exposed to the sun looks really really white! (like scary alien white)Oh and tell Monica that bald headed hubby’s are not that bad… I love when my husband is freshly shaved and puts good smelling stuff on his head. It is super sniffable and kissable. Anyway, good luck on your decision:)
Vanessa, the tan on the head is good advice. I’ll keep that in mind for sure.
Bruce Willis started his acting career with a receding hairline, became a big star, and his career flourished even more after he shaved his head. A bald Patrick Stewart (Cpt. Picard – Star Trek) was voted sexiest man on television in a 1992 TV Guide Poll.
Ultimately, it’s just hair. The person below the hairline is what matters. Since we know that person is a rap-star ninja, the real question is this: If you shave your head will you end up looking in the mirror and seeing Charles Xavier or Lex Luthor? And do either of these potential visages bother you?
Randal, you bring up a great point with Bruce. I don’t think I have as good of a shaped head as that guy though.
Rob… You’re good man! I think you’re thinking a whole lot more about this than anyone else. I’m not everyone, but I’ve never once looked at you and thought “Wow, Rob is really growing an exrta forehead over there!” If you do shave and don’t like it, it may or may not grow back the way it is now and then you have to walk around being more self concious about the new Fester look.
Scott, true. I’m really not self conscious about it. It’s a fact of life. Monica and I were talking about it and I thought it would make an interesting post. Everybody has an opinion so I thought I’d throw it out there for a vote.
You def have a ways to go. I have had mine buzzed for 3-4 years, and am glad I finally took 3 months to slowly grow it out the best I could with my growing forehead… Just try it a little bit shorter, but not buzzed yet. You may like that.
Nic, good advice. That seems like the rout to go.
Rob – Love ya. But you waste too much energy worrying about it!
You look FINE!!! Just As you Are!
Don’t shave your head unless..
1. Your wife agrees
(she looks at you more often than anyone else)
2. Refer to number one.
: )
Amber, I really am not worried about it. It’s a part of life. I just don’t want to hold onto it too long. If I’m going to go bald I want to take care of it before it’s past due.
My son says there’s and app called “BaldBooth” where you can see how you look bald. I’ve considered it myself.
Doug, that sounds like a plan. I’ll have to check that out.
Rob, I think you do have a long way to go before you need to worry about shaving it BUT I voted to go for it because when my hubby turned 30 he went ahead and did it even though he too had a ways to go. I was against it but now 8 years later he has a smooth head and an awesome goatee and he has never looked better to me! But all in all, I think men worry too much about their hair. Women don’t notice it as much as you think we do. A great smile, personality and the ability to make us laugh goes a lot further than you think. You seem to have all that and a wife who loves you for it, so don’t stress over the hair too much 😉
Thanks Kelly. I’m not stressed about it. Just wanted to include everyone on the decision. Thanks again. At this point the vote is to keep it. We will see where this thing goes.
Rob, going bald is a strange quirk of nature. I mean, what is the point? But, if your family loves you regardless, let the worries go. Just be you and be comfortable with whatever you got.
Daniel, will do. Thanks man.
shave it man…it is def low maintenance…smiles.
Thanks Brian!
This should help you make up your mind.

You’re welcome.
Kevin, that was awesome! Thanks for that. Made me laugh.
Honestly this post caught me by surprise. So me and the wife have discussed this. We so go for it. Here is why. Say U do and u hate it or it just doesn’t work for you. What u had will grow back. Additionally becca’s made a great point that Bruce Willis made the shaved look, look hot.
Joseph, Phil Poteat says that it won’t grow back the same. It’s all good though.
Two things:
1)As one with a receding hairline, I’d say you have some time before you’re balding enough to have a problem. (Is your hair retreating in front, or just on top?) But…
2)When it does get to the awkward I’m-balding-but-I’m-in-denial stage, GET RID OF IT. A local guy I know has started this resource for such men:
http://www.happybald.com/
(Check out the store.)
Seriously, I’ve been pondering this question myself recently…ever since I looked at a photo of myself at 18 and then looked at myself in the mirror. I don’t think I’ll ever actually shave it all the way down — I don’t even have the discipline or motivation to keep my face clean-shaven! — but at some point I suspect I will cut it as short as I can with the clippers.
Thanks Burrill! You bring up some great points. I guess we are in this together.
I don’t think you need to – unless you want to. It’s the “style” right now – so GO FOR IT if you want to be trendy 🙂
Cindy, thanks for the comment. We will see where this thing goes.
Don’t spend your kids college fund on Rogaine, but keep on enjoying the hair you have. It looks good. You have a few good years left.
I shaved my head a few years ago due to the same issue, I am glad I did but you have to wait for the right time.
Or you could do a raffle, allowing the winner to shave your head! I would throw in 5 bucks tops for that. Of course the money should go to charity.
Stevie, I like how you think. Now that would be an interesting blog post/competition.
I voted first thing this morning and I actually voted that you still have a way to go… what I find funny is that all these people have posted yeah go ahead and do it man but the WAIT votes are still way ahead… ha ha get it aHEAD… anyhow… I think you should change your profile pic to the one that K. Haggerty made and then see how people respond.
Or you could shave it and if you didn’t like it you could go get hair plugs if it didn’t grow back… then your Blog could be called ROBSHEP – Thoughts from a TRANSPLANT Preacher !
Brian, I love it. Great thoughts. Very funny.
Do you read the Bible? Have you read Leviticus 13:40? “A man who has lost his hair and is bald is clean.”
I say yay, but wait for warmer weather. I love your posts about going bald ‘cuz I’m going through it with you. I feel less bald when I cut it short, though some have told me it doesn’t look good. I have the “go” from my wife as well, so when I get tired of the receding look I get out the clippers.
Stephen, good call. Warmer weather makes a lot more sense.
hey rob man just shave it! i’m a 14 year old barber in training and past summer i shaved my head bald just for the fun off it! it’s the best choice i’ve ever made! just shave it……if u don’t like it just grow it back! rob tell you want i’d be glad to shave your head for you since you haven’t worked up the guts fully yet! all you have to do is sit in my chair and the clippers roll! I would appreciate it very much if you support me in my career sir! Will you give me a shot? Plus i teach you how to shave your own head with nicks/cuts! so you in on this deal sir?

I say go for it. If you don’t like it you can always grow it back. I was unnaturally bald for three years and loved it. I only grew my hair back because my wife likes it better when I have hair on my head.
Larry, I’m afraid that it won’t grow back. I think when it gets warmer I’ll test this out and see how I like it.
My best advice is find a really long hair on your head…and keep that one, but shave the rest…let it go long…longer….way longer…get it to the point of being able to wrap it around your head a couple of millions of times..
Now put a hook on it and go fishing!
*yeah, didn’t work for me either. 🙂
Ed, funny stuff. The comb over is what I’m afraid of. When it comes to that point I’m shaving it for real.
You’ve gotta shave it, Rob.
But don’t just go shave it and call it done.
This has gotta be a production! Get the kids at WEC involved or something…
Ricky, I like how you think. Good call.
Alright Rob, I haven’t gotten to your blog all day and it’s been driving me crazy. Now that I have a chance, here are my words of wisdom:
I have this ability to see people as bald. Sometimes I can’t even shut it off, but not the point. I looked at your profile picture carefully and I think it would take some getting used to. I like you with hair. The term “Ewok” comes to mind, but in a good “you look cute” kind of way.
As far as the bible, it makes multiple points apparently because I thought it said something about not shaving your head. I don’t know, I’m not that familiar with the Bible, I hope to change that in the future.
On to your receding hairline. Don’t look at it as a receding hairline, look at it as an advancing face-line; the less hair you have, the more face you have.
My opinion is that you should do like you said and just keep it until that “balding, but in denial” thing happens.
P.S. For tomorrow’s topic, might I suggest “What did you get for Christmas”
Thanks Sean. I like Ewoks so I’m cool with that.
You have good eyes and eyebrows. If you have good facial features you can pull off a shaved head. Either way, own it and ROCK IT! Much like you did when you rapped during the Christmas service!!! WHAT???? That was way cool! 🙂
The same question i would asked after seeing your photo and Prince William. Is shaving your head makes you better off? Is there any options to try like hair loss pills or hair transplant? I don’t know it would be your choice.
