Did you see the first Sherlock Holmes movie staring Iron Man…er…Robert Downey Jr? If you loved that movie you will love the sequel. If you were impartial about that movie you will be impartial about this movie. If you were confused by the rhetoric of that movie you will extremely confused by this movie.
I like Sherlock Holmes. It’s not my favorite movie franchise but I think that it’s smart, fun, and very well made. I typically feel like there are a lot of great movies that come out at Christmas. This year there is only two that I’m excited to see, Sherlock Holmes and Mission Impossible 4. So far I wasn’t let down.
The plus of Sherlock Holmes is that it’s a clean action movie that has something for both guys and girls. Monica went with me to see it and she enjoyed it as much as I did. The negative of Sherlock Holmes is that it’s a little slow and the dialogue is a little confusing. If you don’t listen quick you will get turned around and confused.
The truth is that for some reason it’s really hard not to like Robert Downey Jr. He’s a great actor! One of the things that makes him great is that he engulfs himself in the character that he’s playing. Even if the movie stunk I would have walked away enjoying it because of him.
Sherlock Holmes 2 is rated PG:13 for intense action violence, a fat English guy who likes to walk around in the buff, and some very mild language. I give it a thumb and a half up.
Rob’s
Two Thumbs Up – A great film worth paying full price.
One and a Half Thumbs Up – A really good film. It’s not ground breaking but it’s a fun ride.
One Thumb Up – A decent attempt and worth seeing at a matinee price.
Thumb to the side – An ok film, but wait for video.
Thumb down – A stinker of a film. Don’t waste you life seeing it.
Did you see Sherlock Holmes 2? If so what did you think?
Heard this was a good one, wondering if you had to see the first movie to get the sequel, or does the second Sherlock Holmes stand on its own.
Sirvhim, it was good. I definitely recommend renting the first one before you see this one. The first one has a darker edge that I didn’t like at first. By the end of the film they explain it and I was better with it. Still there are characters that carry over from the first film.
I’ve always liked Downey….ever since I watched him in the 80’s in Less Than Zero, The Pickup Artist, Johnny Be Good and others.
Larry, I haven’t seen a single one of those movies. I think the first thing I saw him in was the sequel to the Fugitive.
Rob, Less Than Zero is good, but it definitely is dark and disturbing. Everything else is lighter fare and was out when you were a young kid. Well, Less Than Zero was too.
Wow, Less Than Zero… I was just talking about that the other day… Kind of a disturbing but powerful movie and yes RDJ rocked it in that movie!
Good movie! Love the banter.
Monica, you and I should learn to talk like that.
As soon as I saw the ads that it was out, I knew that you would be going to this one. I am glad that you enjoyed it. Plus, it is great how RDJ has turned his life around from the Sheenish train wreck that it had become. (By the way, I just coined a new word there, but feel free to use it without citation.)
Daniel, that was a very un-sheenish comment. Did I use your term right?
Glad to hear it gets a positive review. I really enjoyed the first one and am looking forward to the sequel. I especially liked the glimpse into Holmes’ mind as he methodically thought through the fight sequences and then acted them out. And the banter between Holmes and Watson was quite funny.
Randal, it’s back in this one. It’s really cool what they do with it in the sequel.
We saw it, and really enjoyed it. I watched the first one again the day before we went b/c I heard the new one started where it left off. I agree that sometimes the dialogue is hard to follow, but found that to be true more in the first one. I sometimes have trouble following British accents, especially when it’s a British film. RDJ isn’t British, but he does a great job with the accent as far as I can tell. I like the 2nd one better. I felt it was a little easier to follow, and didn’t have the darkness to it like the first one did. I agree with you, that even if the movie wasn’t that great, I’d still like it because of Robert Downey, Jr. He’s such a great actor, and I too am glad that he has completely turned his life around, and seems to be reaping the benefit of some of those good personal choices. My son saw it, too, and wanted to watch the first one. After he finished watching it, he asked to watch Iron Man 2. I guess he’s an RDJ fan, too.
Faith, that’s funny. I wanted to do the same thing. Watching the second one made me want to watch the first one again and it made me think about watching Iron Man. So many Robert Downy movies and so little time.
That’s on my bucket list, to see all of his movies!
I have not seen it yet, but I liked the first one. I did however finally get to see Rise of the Planet of the Apes! I enjoyed it as much as I thought I would. I am a big fan of the method of telling how all the old movies came about, like the the Star Wars series was done. I am assuming they will come out with another one showing how the Apes inslaved the humans.
Now there is a thought…
Joseph, I liked Rise as well. Great prequel.
K and I really enjoyed the BBC’s “Sherlock”, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. Very clever dialogue, extremely faithful adaptation to a modern setting. The first series is available on Netflix and the second is currently airing in the UK. I loved the RDJ Holmes, I enjoyed “Sherlock” immensely more.
Interesting. I’ll have to check that out at some point. Right now I have had a movie from Netflix for over a month. I need to make time to watch it.
i like downey but was not a fan of the first…intrigued to see the second though…
just popping in to say merry christmas man…hope you and monica and the twins have a great christmas!
Thanks Brian. Good to hear from you. I hope your family has a great Christmas as well!
Kerrie and I saw Ghost Protocol… I think it might be the best of the M.I. films, only problem is I am still on medication and it made it a little hard for me to follow. Usually I am explaining things to her but in this one I was LOST! BUT she did follow it so I am thinking I was a little looped from the drugs, all in all it was a great story, great acting and lots of action! I will have to check it out again but I am sure you would like it. By the way… My most anticipated movie is the Avengers and I’m no superhero fan like you so I am sure you are out of your mind about this one.
Brian, I can’t wait to see that. We are seeing it on Christmas Day. Can’t wait. Oh and we saw a preview with Sherlock Holmes of The Dark Knight rises and I about peed my pants. This summer is going to be a great summer for superheroes.
See, this is why I read your blog. You give me a fighting chance to keep up with the times.
I didn’t know that a second Sherlock Holmes movie was coming out.
I didn’t even know there was a first Sherlock Holmes movie.
In fact, who’s Robert Downey, Jr.?
Just kidding on that last one. I may not remember ever seeing a movie with him in it, but at least I know who he is.
TJ, I’m glad I could help you out with this. Have you seen Iron Man?
Ummmm…no.
Told you I’m not that great at keeping up…
Thanks for the review. I was a fan of the first installment with Robert Downey Jr. and am looking forward to seeing the sequel on a double date tonight.
ThatGuyKC, awesome. Let me know what you think.
I’ve seen the first one and was impressed with how they did it. I like how they explain things every so often and then may later re-explain their explanation, then re-re-explain, etc. I haven’t seen the second one, but I’m waiting in anticipation.
P.S. Have you seen in time? It’s a great movie and a bit thought provoking. It’s also incredibly cool when you think about it.
P.P.S. I tried Chipotle yesterday with my family and discovered some things:
1st: I prefer it in a tortilla and not in a bowl.
2nd: Chipotle is the Subway of Mexican food.
3rd: I LOVE CHIPOTLE!!!!
Sean, I haven’t seen In Time. I’ve heard good things. I’m waiting for rental. I’m so glad that you love Chipotle!
I’ve heard nothing but good about this one – can’t wait to see it!
Cindy, let me know what you think about it.
I love me some RD2 (the affectionate nickname I just gave Robert Downey Jr.) as well. I’ve not seen either Sherlock film, so the question is, do I need to see the first one to enjoy this one? Thinking maybe I’ll rent the first one over Christmas and then check out part 2 in theaters before it leaves. What do ya think?
If RD2 stands for Robert Downey Jr., then riddle me this:
What does R2D2 stand for. (Note, this comment had no real point and is solely based on the amusement of the reader)
lol… I think you’re for sure onto something, Sean!
Sean, that’s really funny. I thought the same thing, but you beat me to it. I like the way you think.
Stephen, I would definitely watch part 1 before I went to go see part 2. It picks up right where the other one left off.
Loved the first one – can’t wait to see this one… hopefully on Christmas night! 🙂
Dustin, nice. Let me know what you think about it.
The review of the movie is interesting. Thanks for sharing this review.
