My wife read the book The Help and loved it. That didn’t bode well for the movie. Most of the time when a movie is based off of a book people say it pales in comparison. That’s why I don’t read non fiction. I like movies too much. Before I give my review let me tell you that my wife loved this movie.
Now on to my review. I think the Help is a great movie! It reminded me of The Blind Side except without football. It’s a very different movie from the Blindside, but it’s similar in the sense that it’s clean, entertaining, and character driven. Most movies fail to create characters that I care about. The Help created multiple characters that were engaging, felt real, and were emotionally driven. If a couple of the actresses don’t get nominated for Oscars there is something seriously wrong.
I didn’t know a lot about The Help going into the theater and I think that helped the experience. I won’t ruin anything. Just know that it’s a great film with a lot of women. If you are a guy don’t expect explosions, fist fights, or ninjas. If you like great movies then you will appreciate The Help. It’s rated PG-13 for a lot of cigarettes (one smoked cigarette equals an automatic PG-13 rating), a few swears, and some drama. I give it two thumbs up. 
One Thumb Up – A decent attempt and worth seeing at a matinee price.
Thumb to the side – An ok film, but wait for video.
Thumb down – A stinker of a film. Don’t waste you life seeing it.

My book club is reading this for August. Thanks for the review; I’ve heard really good things about the movie. I was especially interested once I found out the guy who directed The Help also did the movie Pretty Ugly People, which I liked, too.
I saw this movie on opening night with my mom, and the theater was packed. The audience of the movie laughed and cried through the whole thing, and got an applause at the end. I thought it was a great movie as well. Definitely one of the key characteristics of a great movie is character development, and this movie does that perfectly. It pulls you in and makes you truly care about the characters. I had never even heard of this movie until my mom mentioned it to me, but I completely agree with your rating. 🙂
I agree! The Help was an engaging movie with a well written script and great actors. There were laugh out loud moments and a lot of audience reaction. I went without caring if I saw it or not, but left satisfied with having invested the time for a memorable movie.
I read the book…couldn’t put it down…and thought it was much deeper than the movie. I enjoyed the movie and admit I shed a few tears which I didn’t do while reading. My advice (so who asked???) is read the book and then see the movie!

Also, some of the locations in the movie are places that I hang out at all the time, which is KINDA cool.
