This is post 2 of 2 in a double feature movie review.
I was really excited about Crazy, Stupid, Love. I really enjoy Steve Carell. I love him in the Office. Last summer Date Night was one of my favorite movies of the summer. I own Despicable Me because he’s the voice of the main character. I even like Get Smart. The point is that I like his humor. I heard that Crazy, Stupid, Love was a great movie so I went in with high expectation. My expectations might have been a wee bit too high.
There were parts of CSL that I really liked. There were parts that made me laugh out loud. There were parts that made me want to love the film, but there were also an equal amount of parts that I didn’t like. CSL is what we call a dramedy. It’s part drama and part comedy. I normally like this type of movie because unlike a lot of comedies it actually has a decent plot. I also enjoy dramedies because they make characters that you care about. CSL succeeded in doing that. The plot was engaging and the characters were enjoyable. The problem though is that the content is questionable at best. At one point my wife asked me if the movie was rated R? It’s PG-13 but it does have an unnecessary F-bomb and the content is definitely adult driven. The other thing that I didn’t love about this film is that it’s just sad. Not sad in a “My Girl” type of way were a main character dies. Don’t joke me. I cried my eyes out when Macaulay Culkin died in that movie. It’s sad because of the choices that the characters make. It attempts to redeem them in the end but it wasn’t enough for me to love this movie.
I give it a thumb to the side.
One Thumb Up – A decent attempt and worth seeing at a matinee price.
Thumb to the side – An ok film, but wait for video.
Thumb down – A stinker of a film. Don’t waste you life seeing it.
Spoiler alert on “My Girl”. Geez 🙂
That’s really funny. My bad.
A robshep two-fer! Bonus for me. I would have thought from the commercials that this was a classic “chick flik” or whatever you call those kinds of movies. Well, at least you got out of the house for the evening, so some good came of it.
For sure. It was a great night because we were celebrating 10 years of marriage.
Keep the reviews coming, Rob.
Your list is what we’ll watch when my wife is finally comfortable enough to sit through an entire movie again.
Of course, then we’ll have the baby and no time to watch movies.
Will do. For the first couple of weeks you get to watch a lot of movies if you want. They sleep a lot. It takes about 4-6 hours to watch one because of breaks but you have some down time. Enjoy.
Well said…totally agree with your review…good but not good enough and should have been R or PG18 🙂
I like PG-18. I wish it existed.
Okay Rob – now I don’t know what to do! I haven’t seen this movie yet and wanted to – now I may have to wait for the video with the way you’re describing it!! Mostly I’ve heard good things about it, though. LOVED “my girl” by the way and I cried too 🙂
Cindy, I’m a pretty tough critic. You may like it. I would go to a matinee and not pay full price. Let me know what you think.
hey, thanks for the review. also a big steve carell fan…he will be dearly missed this season on that show. i can’t say as if I was sad about macaulay dying though. heartless? maybe.
I was in 6th grade. I don’t know if I would have cried if I was a little older. I really liked him in Home Alone. It was tough to see him die.
