When it comes to big budget superhero movies the spectrum ranges from Hulk (awful, art house, mess of a movie) to The Dark Knight (amazing, one of the best films of all time, captivating story). I’m a sucker for superhero flicks. I typically end up buying the good and the bad on video. Green Lantern falls somewhere in the middle of the spectrum. Somewhere near Fantastic Four. It’s not the worst superhero movie of all time but it is galaxies away from the best.
The problem with the Green Lantern is it’s too much movie and not enough plot. What I mean is that the movie jumps from earth to space multiple times. Each time it introduces characters but it never goes into depth for any of the supporting cast. The movie sets out to be epic and it feels like a fat guy in a little coat. The size of the movie doesn’t fit no matter how hard it tries.
If you love movies and you love superhero movies then catch this one for a matinee. If not then just wait till it hits video and rent it. It’s rated PG-13 for a few swears and some action violence. I give it a thumb to the side.
Rob’s Rating System =
Two Thumbs Up – A great movie worth paying full price.
One Thumb Up – A decent attempt and worth seeing at a matinee price.
Thumb to the side – An ok film, but wait for video.
Thumb down – A stinker of a film. Don’t waste you life seeing it.
Just watching the previews for this movie I kinda thought this was gonna be a stinker…
I saw that it had a "good" review on cnn.com. I seem to remember that they said it is somewhat better than the disaster many are making it out to be. If that's not a ringing endorsement, I don't know what is. See you later today for post #2!
eh, that stinks…waiting on the dollar theatre…
Brian, since you like superheroes you might like it. Just go in with low expectations. It's a fun popcorn flick but not worth full price.
I agree with CNN. It's not a disaster but it's far from amazing.
Yeah, unless you like superheroes I'd stay far away.
i never really had very high expectations for Green Lantern. And since i use the critical and reliable "Rob's Rating System" for most of my movie going activities and i am slightly low on cash i will most likely wait to rent this one from redbox. looking forward to part 2 of the review. i think i might know what movie it is. haha
Ehh, I've heard mixed reviews… probably more disappointed reviews than positive ones. 🙁
I was planning on catching this one on video. I was just not willing to spend the money to see it at the theater. Captain America on the other hand…I will be going to the theater to see that one!
maybe someday DC will produce movies for their non-Batman heroes that will be on-par with Nolan's Batman films… til then, Marvel Studios owns the game
I'm with you on this one. It was really "meh." It lacked a wow factor and I did not care at all about the characters. It was pretty cool visually, but it was nowhere near a great superhero movie. Looking forward to Captain America.
until DC steps up their game with their non-Batman heroes, the only thing they have going for them is Nolan's Batman trilogy. Marvel Studios owns the game with their consistency.
i commented earlier with a similar post, but it disappeared… so apologies if this shows up twice haha
No worries. I've done the same thing many a times. I'm just happy to see you back in the comments.
Agreed. DC has Marvel with the original Superman and Batman and then the Nolan's Batman. Green Lantern was not a great first attempt to branch out.
I can't wait for Captain America. I hope it comes through and is the best movie of the summer.
You made a wise choice. It's worth a dollar at the Redbox.
Dustin, sometimes reviews aren't fair. In this case I think most have been too harsh. It's not the worst movie ever but it is not great.
Thanks B-Rad!
